How to properly build and design a WIFI network?

WIFI

Network construction and design WIFI is necessary wherever we can’t afford poor data speeds, network downtime or in places where more people are working. Wanting to ensure WIFI network reliability, functionality and security, several elements must be taken into account already at the design stage.

Designing a WIFI network ensures that the company’s Internet is uninterrupted, that files are transferred, that there is smooth switching between access points, and that it is secure in case of failure.

What is WIFI?

WIFI is a trademark, a set of standards for building wireless computer networks. The term WIFI is used interchangeably with WLAN, or wireless LANs based on WLAN radio communication. WLAN is a mobile network that can be easily modified.

WIFI network design: what to pay attention to?

  1. How many users will use the network?
  1. In what area should the WIFI coverage be located? It would be good to place the router in the center of the company.
  1. What is the environment, i.e., are there devices in the company that can interfere with WIFI (e.g., microwave oven, kettle)?

How to build a WIFI network?

To begin with, it is worth considering whether WIFI will be needed in one small office or perhaps in a multi-story building? To build a WIFI network, we need:

  • “Heart”, or router, which is designed to receive the signal from the ISP and send it to specific devices (computers, printers or servers). In the case of a larger building, you will need several routers. It is worth considering a device with the 802.11ac standard,
  • Structured cabling (twisted-pair, fiber-optic cables) – the collection of all cables within a given network,
  • Switch`a (switch) – allows you to connect a given number of network devices (when the network is a bit smaller, its role can be played by a router),
  • NAS drive – with it you can add hard drive resources to your company’s computer network,
  • Wireless or wired network cards in every computer.

What else should you consider before designing your company’s WIFI network?

  1. Calculate the number of computers and other equipment needed for work (workstations).
  2. Prepare a plan for structured cabling (where it will go: in the wall, or in the ceiling).
  3. Finding the best place to switch.
  4. Ensure that each computer has a wired or wireless network card.
  5. Check the power supply to the switch and other devices.
  6. Internet connection.
  7. System configuration and service pricing.

WIFI network security

You can build the network yourself or entrust this task to specialists. The key will be to maintain design standards, as well as to keep to the budget and buy the right equipment. It is worth planning the activities in such a way as to keep in mind the later expansion of the LAN.
