LTE internet versus fiber optics – a comparison

Internet

The telecommunications industry is still debating which link is better. The times when Internet Mobile functioned very slowly, gone to the past. Is it a good alternative to a fixed line?

Many mobile network providers argue that LTE is a substitute for a fixed line. Is this true?

What is LTE?

LTE(Long Term Evolution) is Internet originating from cell phone masts. LTE is a 4G technology that offers several times faster download speeds than 3G.

Mobile Internet was available as early as 2000. At first it was used to display simple text pages that were prepared for mobile devices. A few years later, after WIFI came in, full web pages could be displayed on smartphones. The maximum bandwidth of the LTE network is 150 Mbps.

What are fiber optics?

Fiber optics is a technology for delivering the Internet via fiber optic cable(Fiber To The Home), which is a permanent, interference-free connection. It was constructed as early as the 1960s. More recently, however, glass fibers have entered everyday use and are responsible for data transmission. It looks like a light signal of a given frequency is sent in a glass tube. The quality of the signal does not depend on atmospheric conditions. Data transmission of up to 3 Tbps is possible. In order for the Internet to work, it is enough to place the device at the customer and supplier and attach a fiber-optic cable. The fiber optic cable connects the exchange directly to the customer’s apartment.

LTE or fiber optics: a comparison

LTE is not an alternative to fiber, but it complements them perfectly. A fixed fiber connection is essential for business, transferring large files, audio, video, etc. A fast, efficient and trouble-free network is a money saver (an LTE package can run out). The speed offered by LTE is also satisfactory, and service prices are similar. The difference between the two is that LTE coverage is limited around a single relay in an area of 1-5 km. Besides, the network capacity is shared among users. The more of them use LTE in an area, the more the speed drops. The Internet does not disappear, but the speed slows down significantly. As for LTE performance, weather conditions also play a role here.

Fiber optic technology or LTE: which to choose?

Fiber optics used to be available only in large cities, but now users can also use them in smaller towns. A fiber-optic network allows free access to many services, such as Internet, telephony and television, without causing any interference. An optical signal is sent, which is not shared. LTE is therefore a good complement to a fixed line, for example, when traveling or in emergency situations when network access is essential. However, it is difficult to replace fiber-optic technology, which is fast, unlimited and reliable.
