Tools such as ipcalc or professional online IP calculators eliminate the risk of errors associated with manual binary calculations. The user simply enters the base address and selects the subnet mask, and the tool automatically generates the complete information:

Network address

The mathematical starting point of each subnet. It identifies the entire group of devices. No host may use this address—it is reserved for routing.

Usable addresses assigned to physical devices. The first one is usually reserved for the default gateway (router).

The last address in the subnet, used to send data to all devices simultaneously—for example, an ARP request.

Subnet mask

The /24 subnet (255.255.255.0) is the standard for small offices. In more complex network environments, we often deviate from this pattern to isolate traffic.

Wildcard Mask

The inverse of a subnet mask used in access control list (ACL) rules. It specifies which bits of an address may differ when a rule is matched.

The notation /24 indicates a 24-bit network portion. Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) has replaced the rigid class-based system and forms the foundation of the modern Internet.

Network Classification and Transmission Types

Although the modern Internet is based on classless routing (CIDR), the traditional network class remains an important point of reference in IT education and the configuration of older systems:

Classes A, B, C:

Used for standard unicast communication in networks of various sizes—from global corporations to small offices.

Class D (Multicast):

Reserved for broadcasts to selected audiences. Unlike broadcast, we don't "flood" the entire network with data—packets are sent only to the devices that actually need them (subscribers). This is the foundation of stable streaming and VoIP.

Class E:

Addresses reserved exclusively for research and experimental purposes.

Another key aspect of security is the distinction between public and private addresses. Private addresses are used within an organization and are not routable on the Internet. This allows a company to conceal its internal structure and conserve its pool of global addresses through NAT technology.
