Wi-Fi underwater – an unusual idea of scientists

WIFI network

Until now, this seemed impossible. We realize that water attenuates radio signals, which makes the solutions used on land in such conditions no longer work. However, the idea of the so-called Aqua-Fi, which allows you to use Wi-Fi underwater, has emerged. How will it work?

The problem of efficient communication in such conditions has long occupied many scientists. Until now, it was possible to connect underwater, but only over short distances. It seemed an unattainable dream to use Wi-Fi over longer distances. Today, there are many indications that the idea has a chance to enter the implementation phase. The technology, called Aqua-Fi, was invented by researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Operation of the new technology

Their system relies on beams to transmit high-definition video underwater. The rules are simple. A diver uses a waterproof smartphone, transmitting any media from it. The data, in the form of radio waves, is transmitted to a Raspberry Pi-based computer, which can be mounted on the diver’s cylinder, for example. The device assumes the role of a router and, while amplifying the signal, converts the data into very fast light pulses. The pulses can be emitted using a laser or LEDs. At depths of up to 10 meters, communication is carried out using LEDs, while at greater depths laser communication is used. The signal transmitted in this way is intended to be received by a photodetector located on the ship’s hull. A computer on board the ship would in turn convert the pulses into original videos and photos, from where they would be transmitted to the Internet via satellite. According to the assumptions, the bandwidth of the solution would be maintained at 2 Mbit/s.

What has been achieved so far? The researchers tested Aqua-Fi using two computers placed a few meters apart. They transferred files between them, recording a maximum data transfer rate of 2.11 megabytes per second. The trials were conducted in standing water in a swimming pool. The researchers believe that the biggest challenge will be to maintain a stable connection with the diver constantly changing his position. Now the device will adjust to normal water conditions, such as the fast speed of the flowing water. There are many indications that this is the first step toward a technology that allows Internet use in unusual conditions.

Internet for business

Wi-Fi underwater is not yet available, but as a consolation, ITH offers Internet services for business. The process of purchase and its connection is carried out in a smooth way, so that you can start your business operations as soon as possible. With us you will find no long-term contracts and you decide for yourself what parameters are suitable for you. The ongoing project “The Shield from ITH” allows you to get free Internet access until the end of 2020. During this time you can test our services and in January 2021 decide whether you stay with ITH for the long term.
