Traditional landline telephony and VOIP (virtual telephony) from the outside are no different. The telephone, microphone or speakers look the same, but the two services are completely separate. Which one should you opt for?
VOIP is Voice over Internet Protocol technology, which is the transmission of audio digitally via IP protocol. Until recently, VOIP was a solution less often chosen because of the quality of the Internet connection. Nowadays, the Internet connection offers really good quality, so VOIP provides audibility, modernity and customizability of the service. Not to mention the cost savings to VOIP.
Traditional telephony
- In terms of equipment, traditional telephony relies on dedicated lines, telecommunications cards and dedicated analog or digital cameras.
- Considering the number of calls made, for analog telephony it is 1 call per line (for ISDN there are 30 calls per line).
- The link provider is usually a single operator. The change of operator is not done ad hoc, you need the consent of the previous one to use the links or create a new connection.
- Numbering is tied to the geographic location of the office. Traditional telephony is usually billed on a subscription basis, and calls between company departments are charged extra.
- It has the advantage of high quality phone calls and resistance to external interference.
VOIP
- Virtual telephony uses an Internet connection, a computer, a dedicated IP camera or just a softphone application (also available for free).
- You can have multiple conversations at the same time, and there are no hard constraints involving infrastructure, only Internet bandwidth (and possibly arrangements with the provider).
- The issue of the operator: it is arbitrary, and the change is carried out quickly and is not a problem.
- Numbering is not related to the location of the office.
- Importantly, there is no or very low subscription fee for VOIP. Calls and forwarding between company branches are free, regardless of location.
- You can easily manage the service online from the administration panel.
- You can manage call costs based on system statistics.
- There are more opportunities for VOIP expansion.
- The service startup time is almost instantaneous and does not require the help of specialists.
- There may be momentary reductions in the quality of phone calls, similar to cell phone calls.
- Greater VOIP security: the chances of eavesdropping and hacking are greatly reduced.
- More additional options: IVR (i.e., configuration of automatic voice announcements and voice synthesizer), virtual fax, teleconferencing and more.
Telephony: traditional or VOIP?
If you are concerned with cost savings, speed of service deployment, security or want good call quality within the country and abroad, VOIP will be a good choice. The cost of installing traditional telephony is higher than for VOIP, because you have to include installation, equipment, subscription, service, roaming and other, sometimes hidden costs. The quality of a VOIP connection is dependent on an Internet connection, and you can often find PoE, indicating that models derive this power of theirs through cable. A virtual PBX makes it easy to work remotely. VOIP is a good and scalable solution not only for large companies, but also for smaller ones, where a smartphone with a softphone application will work well. If the company is a bit larger and has more branches, it is worth buying office phones. VOIP means greater transparency and the ability to manage the service online, ensuring the security of calls (e.g. TLS protocol encryption).
